How To Protect Your Skin This Summer
All dermatologists will tell you that it’s super important to wear your SPF every day! Even if it’s cloudy! I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with sunscreen because i’ve suffered from skin issues my whole life. Typical chemical sunscreens gave me eczema and other itchy skin situations and often clogged my pores. Neutrogena products were the only sunscreens that didn’t irritate my skin during my childhood. We have so many great mineral sunscreens on the market today that don’t leave the skin with a white cast or a chalky appearance. New formulations are gentle on skin while providing great protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays.
According to this Well + Good article: “Mineral sunblocks put a layer of protection on the skin like a shield, so the sun’s rays literally bounce off of it,” explains dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD. Using a mineral sunscreen means that it will block both UVA and UVB rays or give broad spectrum coverage. “The reason why we want broad spectrum is UVA is usually what causes what we think of as skin aging, sun spots and wrinkles, and then skin cancer. UVB is that immediate burn.”
In addition, mineral sunscreen might just be the safest option on the market right now. According to an FDA study from February, only two of the sixteen common active ingredients in sunscreen—zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—were “Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective”. SO THAT’S KINDA WILD! See below to shop some great mineral sunscreens to protect your skin this summer.
Happy summer everyone!
